There has been an enormous amount of hype in the IT press recently about "Cloud"-based solutions.
Most of the talk is about handing all your IT services and data over to well-known, global IT giants, and hoping that they'll keep them stable, secure and private - which may or may not prove to be the case.
Less noise is made about the fact that the same technologies which enable large-scale cloud computing - interoperable, web-based infrastructure and reliable virtualisation - also enable extremely cost-effective and flexible hosting solutions on a far smaller scale than that of a Google or an Amazon. Having your own "cloud" also means that you are less likely to be affected by large-scale infrastructure failures which have recently plagued the big providers.
